FF. Spine by Formafantasma is a freestanding bookcase that highlights the beauty of solid wood. It is composed of an internal upright structure in epoxy powder-coated steel tubing; solid wood support bracket and upright; and MDF shelves in a sandwich construction with aluminum and wood veneer.
FF. Spine is based on a vocabulary of understated design, articulated in a linear form with pronounced geometric virtuosity. The bookcase is characterized by a multitude of solid wood elements, varied in grain and cut, which—thanks to the object’s modularity—are combined to maximize each part of a tree trunk, preserving this valuable resource.
Through high-level cabinetmaking, each element—consisting of a support bracket attached to an upright that holds a shelf—has been crafted through the meticulous work of Cassina’s artisans, enhancing the wood's quality.
The design of FF. Spine is deliberately archetypal in its intentionally measured form. This simplicity makes it particularly versatile, allowing it to blend naturally into any environment, adapting to individual needs and perfectly reflecting The Cassina Perspective.
The bookcase is offered in three practical versions: freestanding and double-sided—ideal for placement in the center of a room; with a floor base and wall fixing; and suspended with wall fixing. This latter version is open to a wide range of modular configurations, as there are no limits on the number of uprights, allowing for alternating shelf lengths to create a dynamic interplay of full and empty spaces.
FF. Spine emphasizes the uniqueness of wood, combining two finishes for each model. The bookcase is available in two natural versions: the first in ash paired with Canaletto walnut brackets; the second in natural Canaletto walnut with dark-stained Canaletto walnut details. The black-stained ash variant is also paired with dark-stained Canaletto walnut brackets.
The two designers have also introduced three color variants that reveal the wood grain to enhance its natural beauty. In this case, red, blue, and green shades are applied manually with a cloth on the ash, while the brackets, in the same color, receive an additional sprayed coat for a more intense ton-sur-ton effect.
